Our MissionTo conduct the practice of law predicated on the highest professional and ethical standards, providing cost effective representation to all clients, and affording professional camaraderie. The highest professional and ethical standards intends a commitment to serving the firm's clients and the profession in a manner that sets a salutary example for all lawyers. Cost effectiveness is achieved through a disciplined case assignment and management approach which sets proportionality of costs and case value as a benchmark for achieving the client's goals. Professional camaraderie envisions placing the firm, as an institution, above the individual desires of any one partner. Firm ProfileJordan Coyne & Savits, L.L.P. is a registered limited liability partnership structured in the traditional manner with ten partners and ten associates. The firm is rated by Martindale and Hubbell. Its partners belong to all the local insurance defense attorney organizations, the Defense Research Institute, the Torts and Insurance Practice Section and the Professional Liability Section of the American Bar Association. As you will see from the biographical summaries, the firm has also served the local bar organizations as well as the community at large in varied ways. Jordan Coyne & Savits, L.L.P. for the past 25 years has provided civil litigation defense to a diverse range of clients, combining skilled litigation defense services with cost effective representation well before the advent of cost controls. The firm currently has offices in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. The Virginia and D.C. offices are fully and separately staffed. This is due to the unique geographical nature of the Washington metropolitan area with two States contiguous to the District of Columbia and all three having different licensing requirements. It should be noted that the majority of the firm's lawyers are licensed to practice in more than one State. This affords a substantial degree of flexibility in case assignments and support. The District of Columbia office is the principal office, providing the computerized billing support for the firm. The firm has a computerized time-keeping system that provides detailed, computer generated bills to our clients. To upgrade our capabilities and to address Year 2000 issues, the firm adopted Foundation Software Laboratories, Inc.'s Practical Digital Partner, for time and billing, accounting, time management and practice management. All bills are subjected to a double review before they are sent to the client. The first review takes place in the accounting department and it seeks to identify obvious human errors in recording time (e.g. wrong computer number identified on time entry, charges that are miscoded to a case, etc.). The draft bill is then forwarded to the partner in charge of billing for the client. He or she reviews the bill and, beyond detecting errors, exercises judgment in writing off time that fails to meet the client's guidelines or is excessive in the context of the task assigned. This judgmental process has historically resulted in writing off some three to five percent of recorded time prior to sending the bill to the client. Representative clients include Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co.; American International Group; Budget Rent A Car Systems; Clark Construction Group; Westport (formerly known as COREGIS); Chicago Insurance Company; Crawford & Company; General Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists; Federated Department Stores; Giant Food; Gould Electronics Inc.; The Harleysville Insurance Companies; Howard University Hospital; Interstate Insurance Company; Kemper Insurance Group; Lexington Insurance Company; Marriott Corp.; Podiatry Insurance Company of America; Risk Enterprises Management, Ltd.; Scottsdale Insurance Co.; Sibley Memorial Hospital; Travelers Indemnity Co.; Washington Adventist Hospital; Washington Hospital Center; and Zurich North America. The founding partners of the firm were predominantly former U.S. Marines, including Maj. Gen. John T. Coyne, USMCR (Ret.), presently retired from the firm, and James F. Jordan, a former Marine Corps aviator, presently Of Counsel to the firm. To this day, much of the firm's tone, culture and values is derived from the Marine Corps experience of its founders. |
